Usually food reviews are one off thing and I hardly return to the same restaurant for 2nd round mostly because it’s over my current budget, with the unemployed status and all. But I got to taste Frontera’s food twice.

The first time was with the usual last week. We got to know the owner, Larry, who’s a Texan (I think..) and also is a big fan of Mexican food, thus Frontera was born.

I’m not using my own photos this time because… Well I got my hands into the food BEFORE shooting them. What a photographer eh? The food has a evil mind..

Before any food intake, we must always wet our taste buds with some elixir to enhance the experience.

That sounds so advertorial, haha..

Anyways, I’ve tasted a few margaritas in my life, but most of which are quite lousy. I’ve tried an ice blended mix, which in the end tasted more of ice than alco, while others are just short of ingredients for the right taste.

Frontera’s Agave Margarita taste better than the rest with added punch. Seriously. Made with 100% agave nectar and comes in a 45ml cup (double than what you usually get outside) I think paying RM15 for this is much more worth it than the ones in the bar and clubs.

Agave Margarita

It’s said that margarita that’s made with more agave nectar doesn’t produce hangovers the next day because of lesser amount of certain alcohol in it.

On to the Appetizers. First off is chips & dips. Frontera has a few dips that would certainly able to suit every chips lover out there.

Firstly, chips & the salsa dip. For salsa/chilli lovers out there, this is definitely the one you’d want to have. Compared to Wendy’s chilli and A&W’s coney dog chilli (i know, quite outdated but that’s the nearest that I could ever taste to real chilli), this definitely taste better than those two combined.

Chips & Salsa

Secondly, chips & the Chili Con Queso dip. My first experience with chips and cheese was at Chilli’s, introduced by Kelz, the cheese is served warm. I remembered that we dip and scooped like mad for more cheese, but the serving was so little (cheese) that we always wanted more.

On the other hand, at Frontera they gave us a bowl of cheesielicious cheese! Made from Monterrey Cheese, must try for cheese lovers! While it’s bottomless but it was nearly suitable for everything else we ate! (Maybe because we love cheese..)

Chips & Chili Con Queso

Finally, chips & Chili Con Carne dip. Remember the Chilli Con Quesco dip? It’s slightly similar but with cheese and onions. Me being a cheese lover, I think more cheese should be in it, but that’s just me. Other than that it tasted quite fine.

Chips & Chili Con Carne

Next, still with appetizers, some real chilies and nachos! Frontera’s Nachos comes with chicken (or beef) together with preserved Jalapeno chilies and topped off with cheese is one of my favourite dish. I ordered this again during my 2nd visit to Frontera.

Frontera's Nachos

Taquitos de Pollo. Corn tortillas and chicken with a slightly spicy and sour dip on the side. Wasn’t really my dish because I find the tortillas were slightly too hard (somewhat like chips left in the open for while, a.k.a masuk angin) and couldn’t taste the chicken.

Taquitos de Pollo

Habanero Chicken Wings is my 2nd favourite dish as an appetizer because of the sauce. The sauce is a Habanero BBQ sauce, making it slightly spicy, though still bearable to those who are chilli intolerant (because Jen tried it!). Comes with a Cilantro ranch dressing.

Habanero Chicken Wings

And yes, I ordered the chicken wings during my 2nd visit. However, I find the chicken wings were red on the inside, maybe wasn’t cooked properly, and also the sauce wasn’t that tasty as the first round I had. My parent’s comments were ‘so-so only’. Maybe Frontera should up the Habanero dosage?

That’s all for the appetizers. Click on page 2 for more!

Me is hungry. Me is always hungry.

So, I dropped by at Cupcake Chic for a dose of sweetness.

*nom nom nom*

Jaffa, Chocolate orange cake with chocolate orange glaze

Jaffa. It reminds me of my childhood candy, smarties, simply because it tastes like it. Slightly zesty as well. But I found it slightly too sweet. If you’re on a cupcake marathon, eat this the last.

Blueberry Crumble, Blueberry oats cake with oats crumble

If you’re the kind who’s health conscious, you may want to try this Blueberry Crumble. Oats in the crumble with a considerate amount of blueberry jem in the core. Tastes like muesli bars. It’s quite filling as well as oats expands with water. (actually all cupcake does, but this one even more I guess.)

Blackforest, Light cherry chocolate cake with whipped cream frosting

Me favourite. Blackforest. Very moist and not too sweet. Berries in the middle! *nom nom nom*

Lemon Meringue, Lemon cake with meringue topping

Lemons. If you like something zesty but not sweet like the Jaffa, Lemon Meringue is the one. Very slight sour taste which comes with the lemon and chewie to the core. Yes, chewie.

Tiramisu, Coffee infused cake with cheese frosting

Finally favourite of the favourites! Tiramisu! Though I’d like to give a little suspense to you guys on the taste but.. I figured telling you guys that it tastes yummily coffee, vanilla and a touch of heaven would bore you guys. So I’d keep it to myself and wont tell you guys that this cupcake is soooooo moist and again, yummilyyyy.

So get your own, and taste them yourself.

If you’re wondering how much one cupcake costs, it’s RM4.50 per *nom* and lesser if you buy *noms* by the dozen, or even half. Check out their fan page @ Facebook or their official site.

Okay. Cut me some slack on this photo post, because I’m bad around food when i have my camera around.

My first experience with food (together with Nadia, the camera. <del datetime="2009-01-23T18:46:20+00:00">YES SHE HAS A NAME! Nao shoo.</del>) was at a coffee shop in Sri Petaling. Ended up with a cup of leong sui in my camera bag, sinking my most expensive lens (back then) in it.

Now my lens bathing experience has stopped, forever hopefully.

So, what’s this fuzz about my camera lens and all. Well it’s because she has seen yummy food from KL and *ehem* Penang! This being a post on food, I want to do this right with a brief intro of this restaurant.

Please mind the rumour.

Rumours is situated in Desa Sri Hartamas, just behind Souled Out. It serves fusion dishes while the ambiance gives a calm and soothing feel to your dining experience.

With the Chinese New Year 2 days away, Rumours has came up with a special Chinese New Year menu to cater for the reunion dinners that we all have on the eve of every Chinese New Year.

Enough talk, lets look at what they have in store for you and the family at Rumours.

Firstly, what’s a CNY reunion dinner without the traditional Lou Sang?

Lou Sang with White Tuna or Salmon.

Although I mentioned ‘traditional’, the fusion brought into this dish makes it a little unique with the raw white tuna (or you could stick with salmon, if you’re feeling old school). I’m quite particular about my sushi, and the white tuna tasted very good. Something different from the usual fish we eat for ‘lou sang-ing’.

*please ignore my feeble attempt with cantonese*

Lets start the tossing! Higher = Property *as long as you land it back in the plate*

Ginger Chicken Consomme

Next I had a bowl of soup called Ginger Chicken Consomme. There were a few fried wantans in the soup. The fried wantans weren’t soggy though. I personally find it peppery. I also find it slightly too salty for my liking. On the other hand, one of my dates added more pepper into it and said it wasn’t enough..

So, top tip of the day, if you like pepper in your soup,
go for the Ginger Chicken Consomme @ Rumours.

Lets move on to the main course.

There are 3 dishes to choose from for the main course;

Braised Beef Tenderloin in Chinese BBQ Sauce

Pan Fried Five Spiced Duck Breast

Steamed White Cod with Plum Sauce

All three dishes comes with buttered brown herb rice and vegetables.

Braised Beef Tenderloin in Chinese BBQ Sauce

Because of my mother, I personally don’t get eat beef that much. However, occasionally I’ll steal a bite from dishes like this. Among the 3 dishes mentioned for the main course, I prefer this dish because it’s tender and soft.

Now, I’m not saying this just because it looks tender and soft, but IT IS tender and soft. I felt like i was cutting through butter when I cut out a slice for myself. Imagine backyard BBQ, but way better.

Pan Fried Five-Spice Duck Breast

If you like some quack quack in your reunion dinner, this is the one. Not only the quack encourages communication between family members, it makes your mouth itch for more quack. The reason is simply because not only is the duck is extremely tender, you’re also enticed by the aromatic herbs and spices marinated in the duck.

The rice in this dish tastes *and smells* better because of the fusion between the duck, the spices and the butter from the rice making it tastier and slightly creamier than the other 2 dishes.

Steamed White Cod with Plum Sauce

Fish lovers would certainly love this dish. The light taste of the Plum sauce together with the butter from the rice gives the fish a smooth and slightly tangy taste.

‘Tangy taste in my cod?’ Don’t worry, unless you’re allergic to plum sauce, because the tangy is not stingy and I’ll personally recommend this dish if you don’t eat beef.

Finally, the desert.

Red Bean Pancake with Sesame Ice Cream & Fruits

Remember that I said Rumours is all about fusion? This desert is not spared from “fusionism” as well. This hot and cold desert is almost as good as a chocolate brownie and vanilla ice cream, only less sinful.

I have not tried sesame ice cream in my life (I’m sure some of you have not either) and I’m sure Rumours is one of the best place to start. Here’s a teaser of how the sesame ice cream tastes like; imagine peanut butter only colder and not as thick. The red bean paste was slightly rough because it was handmade, crushed and smashed but not too much till it’s pulp. Although red bean isn’t my preferred desert, but the combination is good and you should eat both hot and cold desert together.

Hungry?

Then check out Rumours’ Chinese New Year menu before it ends on the 9th February. Reasonably priced at RM168+ for 4 pax, great for the typical Chinese family. RM336+ for 8 pax and RM488+ for 12 pax.

Rumours is located at :
24, Jalan 28/70A Desa Sri Hartamas,
50480 Kuala Lumpur.
(block behind Souled Out, same row at Silveridge)
For reservations, please call : 603 2300 6650
