The scenario: I have my own small personal business, which brings in some money every month. I work alone and alone only. I don’t need other people to help me out because it’s a simple business. I pay my bills, clients pay their bills, I get richer by a few hundreds. I’m still hoping to expand in the future by diversifying my services.

The problem: Longevity. If I’m not here, who’s going to be responsible for my clients? Who’s going to pay the bills, collect the money? Family knows nuts about what I do, so they can’t help, and friends? It’s a matter of trust I suppose. I don’t give my full trust when it comes to money, so what can I do then?

I have a friend who started this thing with me, but she dropped off after that when I took full control. She’s still the secondary contact to the accounts in the event of an emergency. One thing is, we met online, but never actually met face to face before. Talking about putting your full trust into someone you never actually met.

In terms of contribution, I’ve contributed 99% of all the work and clients, but she did thought me how to do this and that in the early beginning.

So, back to the question, what can I do then?

I recently had access to a Virtual Private/Dedicated Server and have been wondering what I can do with it. To make things short, almost everything that I can do with my computer, I could also do it on the VPS. Here are some of the things you could do with a VPS/VDS:

Run a Game Server (dedicated game server)

Run a Webserver (host websites/scripts)

Run a database server (to compliment the webserver)

Run an online radio/video streaming server

Create a virtual private network (VPN, for proxying your internet connection)

Run a VOIP server (make calls online, free?)

Run a IRC server (mIRC days huh?)

Run a FTP server (host and transfer files between people)

Run a torrent tracker server or just download torrents with the VPS/VDS

Host a cloud computing software

Here’s what you can’t do with a VPS/VDS:

Can’t use it as a very expensive paperweight (however your physical server can)

That’s all that I can think of. Any more? Leave a comment!

Been working with htc’s site on a while and was stuck on a few things because lack of bits and pieces of information to do my work.. I wanted to know which hosting was the sites was on so this is what I did.

Two things you need, your command prompt (Start > Run > Type in ‘cmd’ > OK/Enter) and a DNS trace service.

First find out the host IP address via the command prompt.

C:\> ping cincauhangus.com

This will start pinging the domain as well as giving you the IP address of the domain (which might look something like this: 123.234.4.24).

There’s an alternative to this method. You can try using the DNS Lookup tool and do an ‘A’ DNS lookup. It will then return the IP address similar to the method above.

Using that IP address, do a reverse DNS lookup. It will then return a web/domain address.

Now that you have that information, you can do a WHOIS Lookup. If the results of the reverse DNS lookup has a subdomain in it, remove it and enter the domain address only (eg: mschosting.com and not something.mschosting.com)

The results will tell you the company that owns that domain, which usually is the hosting company for that website you’re checking out.
