The scenario: I have my own small personal business, which brings in some money every month. I work alone and alone only. I don’t need other people to help me out because it’s a simple business. I pay my bills, clients pay their bills, I get richer by a few hundreds. I’m still hoping to expand in the future by diversifying my services.

The problem: Longevity. If I’m not here, who’s going to be responsible for my clients? Who’s going to pay the bills, collect the money? Family knows nuts about what I do, so they can’t help, and friends? It’s a matter of trust I suppose. I don’t give my full trust when it comes to money, so what can I do then?

I have a friend who started this thing with me, but she dropped off after that when I took full control. She’s still the secondary contact to the accounts in the event of an emergency. One thing is, we met online, but never actually met face to face before. Talking about putting your full trust into someone you never actually met.

In terms of contribution, I’ve contributed 99% of all the work and clients, but she did thought me how to do this and that in the early beginning.

So, back to the question, what can I do then?

I recently had access to a Virtual Private/Dedicated Server and have been wondering what I can do with it. To make things short, almost everything that I can do with my computer, I could also do it on the VPS. Here are some of the things you could do with a VPS/VDS:

Run a Game Server (dedicated game server)

Run a Webserver (host websites/scripts)

Run a database server (to compliment the webserver)

Run an online radio/video streaming server

Create a virtual private network (VPN, for proxying your internet connection)

Run a VOIP server (make calls online, free?)

Run a IRC server (mIRC days huh?)

Run a FTP server (host and transfer files between people)

Run a torrent tracker server or just download torrents with the VPS/VDS

Host a cloud computing software

Here’s what you can’t do with a VPS/VDS:

Can’t use it as a very expensive paperweight (however your physical server can)

That’s all that I can think of. Any more? Leave a comment!

Google Chrome is cool. Nuff said. (nothing to do with nuffnang) Here’s my comments on Chrome

The Good:

Chrome’s tab interface is cool and easy to use. Love the tab dragging feature. Truely drag & drop.

Chrome’s Omnibox (a.k.a Address box) is quite cool as auto complete is better than Firefox’s (so I heard, but initial tests were quite good)

Chrome’s start page is very innovative. And time saving as well.

Die pop-ups! DIE!

No title bar = more viewing space for laptop users like me. Only tabs bar and navigation bar. Bookmarks bar as well, if you want it. Status bar is also no no, but replaced with a pop up one. No idea how to describe it to you. Go see for yourself.

History Page is unique, has timestamps on all the pages/sites that you went to. It’s a page on its own. The Download window (in Firefox) also follow’s the History Page’s format. Haven’t test it out yet but I guess it’s about the same.

Not enough screen real estate on your textbox? Expand it! All textboxes (multi line) can be resized for better viewing.

Google Chrome’s FAQ/Manual/Story.

The Bad:

Needs a little more polishing on the I/O devices interaction, eg mouse wheel punya scrolling quite fast.

NO SPELL CHECKER!

Facebook seems buggy with Chrome. Most likely the Flash plugin not that polished yet. AJAX support needs to be fixed

Tabs doesn’t flash/notify me when there’s an alert (eg: like a pop-up alert or something)

Password manager is unsecured.

Copying is buggy. Doesn’t copy the exact format. (I copy paste a lot of stuff, for blogging and other plagiarising activities) Or maybe the WordPress text editor ada problem with Chrome?

I find Chrome is pretty.. Optionless? Not much configuration to play with. Maybe this is a good thing?

That’s my first hour impression on Google Chrome. Try it out!

If you’ve read today’s papers or Malaysiakini (Malaysia Today blocked! Order from MCMC) you would have known that Malaysia government has blocked access to the Malaysia today website a.k.a Raja Petra’s blog.

For some reason I’m still able to view that website and I just realised why. It’s because I’m not using TMNet’s DNS service.. I’m using OpenDNS service. Free and censor free.

All I can think is that TMNet has blocked access to that website by blocking the domain name itself and not the IP address in their DNS service. Therefore, if you were to use a different DNS service you may be able to still view that website.

OpenDNS’s nameserver address are as follow: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.

Instructions on how to use OpenDNS click here if you’re using Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OSX Leopard, Mac OSX Tiger, Others.

Update: Alternatively you can go to Malaysia Today website at this address: http://mt.harapanmalaysia.com/2008/
or http://202.75.62.114/2008/
