What is ShutterPulse?

I’ve been doing some promo in my latest photos, hint: text. If you still don’t know what is ShutterPulse, it’s our photography company.

Our = Me, Nigel & David.

We’re gonna try to go full fledged into this business, though we’re on a tight budget at the moment and short on experience. Hopefully more jobs will come in, giving us a boost.

Been working on the website itself a lot for the past few days, adding new features to the site like portfolio, contact page, etc. Some thing that I haven’t got the chance to explore in WordPress till now, the Pages feature. Now it looks more like a CMS than a blog, though I still think the main page needs a bit more stuff. Maybe some rotational banners or stuff.

Maybe I’m doing too much to the site already.

The site is 90% functional, a few kinks here and there needs to be sorted out, but it’s there for your viewing pleasure. Check it out!

Temporary fixes:

1. If you’re using Linux/Apache on your webserver, you don’t really need the index.php anyway. Try removing it. The index.php thing was only meant for IIS servers, which don’t support mod_rewrite.

2. If you need/want the index.php to be there, then on the Settings->Permalinks screen, add some values in for the category and tag bases. The words “category” and “tag” will do just fine. As long as they are not blank, this should work around the bug.

The easiest would be to try #2 but still it’s your choice. The next version of WordPress (2.6.1?) shall fix these problems. Source.

So what are the new features in WP2.6? I’ll start off with the minor ones first.

Word Count

Word Count! I doubt this feature is available in Blogger So, this feature is a first for web based blog editor, I think.

Remote Publishing Options

In previous versions of WordPress, this feature is enabled by default but now you’re given full control whether you’d want to enable it or not.

Default Avatars

Now you have the ability to choose a default avatar (if your theme uses it) for your readers.

Improved Plugin Management UI

On the left is the WP2.5′s Plugin Management Interface (PMI), and on the right is WP2.6′s PMI. In WP2.6, the active and inactive plugins are separated to provide a better viewing, good for those with 100s of plugins installed.

Google Gears Integration

Post Revisions

Post revision is something very new to all the blogging systems out there. It provides Wiki like revision system where you can track all your previous edits of a post and revert if necessary.

Other new & enhanced features:

1. Press This! bookmarklet is back!
2. Theme preview!
3. Plugin update notification bubble.
4. Drag-and-drop reordering of Galleries
5. A completely revamped image control to allow for easier inserting, floating, and resizing. It’s now fully integrated with the WYSIWYG.

What I want to do now is:

• Remove all posts posted before 2008, and unrelated pages
• Remove all unrelated categories & tags
• Create new categories and categorise newer posts accordingly
• I may keep the current permalink structure intact (currently it’s ‘%category%/%postname%’ )

So currently I think I got down a few problems that I may encounter:

• Permalink restructuring problems
• 404 Errors
• Database corruption (If i result to doing it manually through the database)

Are there any plugin(s) that can make this task easier for me? I’m much more worried about database corruption and 404 errors. (maybe Google Sitemap can fix the 404s?)

If I’m going to do this manually, I think I may take 2-3 days of man hours doing it. But class is starting on Tuesday.

I’m a categoric-freak. Need to put things into order everytime it goes ugly. *same reason why I have a new blog now. *
