WordPress 2.6 is out
Written on July 15, 2008 by CincauHangus
WordPress 2.6 is oooouttt! Another reason why I love WordPress. Not Blogger.
So what are the new features in WP2.6? I’ll start off with the minor ones first.
Word Count
Word Count! I doubt this feature is available in Blogger
So, this feature is a first for web based blog editor, I think.
Remote Publishing Options
In previous versions of WordPress, this feature is enabled by default but now you’re given full control whether you’d want to enable it or not.
Default Avatars
Now you have the ability to choose a default avatar (if your theme uses it) for your readers.
Improved Plugin Management UI
On the left is the WP2.5’s Plugin Management Interface (PMI), and on the right is WP2.6’s PMI. In WP2.6, the active and inactive plugins are separated to provide a better viewing, good for those with 100s of plugins installed.
Onto the bigger features.
Google Gears Integration
About Google Gears:
Gears is a plug-in that extends your browser to create a richer platform for web applications. To install Gears, visit http://gears.google.com
Gears was designed to be used on both Google and non-Google sites. A number of web applications currently make use of Gears, including two Google products: Google Reader and Google Docs. Additionally, Zoho and Remember the Milk have been using Gears since its original launch. If you’re running Windows Mobile on your cellphone, Picasa Web Albums also makes use of Gears.
So what does it do to your WordPress? This:
Post Revisions
Post revision is something very new to all the blogging systems out there. It provides Wiki like revision system where you can track all your previous edits of a post and revert if necessary.
Other new & enhanced features:
- Press This! bookmarklet is back!
- Theme preview!
- Plugin update notification bubble.
- Drag-and-drop reordering of Galleries
- A completely revamped image control to allow for easier inserting, floating, and resizing. It’s now fully integrated with the WYSIWYG.
