Steven Lee Photography Workshop
Written on July 1, 2008 by CincauHangus
Attended the slphotoworks photography workshop last Sunday, conducted by Steven Lee.
To be honest, I’m considered quite new to all of these photography thingies and jargon and everything in between. Spent a fortune on my Canon 30D, Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6, Canon EF 50mm f1.8 (thanks Chung Lern), and Canon 430EX Flash. All were 2nd hand, except for the flash. More than 5k is spent here, not including the repair costs of my 17-85mm that got soaked in ‘leong sui’ due to my clumsiness.
Come to think about it, I regret not getting the Tamron 17-50mm f2.something. That would really save a lot of my pictures from going blur, noisy, etc. And it was cheaper than the 17-85mm. Sigh.
Back to the topic.
Got to know about the workshop through my cousin, Wy-San. I think the workshop may be an overkill for her, but we all gotta start from somewhere eh?
Anyways, the workshop is 2 weeks long at The Annexe, Central Market. Wait, it’s 2 Sundays long. Didn’t get to learn much, but got some new ideas after looking at other participants’ photos.
Before the workshop, everyone had some homework to do before attending. We had to pick one/two photographers and why we liked them. Then we had to present a portfolio of our own pictures as well.
I, didn’t do any of that. *read: lazy* Instead, I came empty handed, the camera was there of course, duh. Luckily there was WiFi, so showed a few pictures that I’ve uploaded onto my Flickr. But it wasn’t really entertaining, coz could see everyone was kinda bored.
Anyway, I was babbling about how I started off with my camera phone and how I took panorama shots, etc. Basically trying to show off to a pro la, which fails quite miserably.
Steven also showed some of his works, and some of the photographers that he admires. Some of which I recognised after watching The Genius of Photography on National Geographic, which I eventually downloaded the whole series after missing a few episodes. If you’re into photography, download this series.
Didn’t much during this workshop (didn’t I just say that?) but we’re gonna learn more on the next workshop. I may need to bring a model whom I can shoot. Hmmm.. Who eh.. Nadia? Mae?
Also met Amelia Chen, the main actress in How I Learn To Drive by Paula Vogel. Seems that she got her dslr from Nicholas Chin, who told me he wanted to sell his Nikon D70s earlier this year. Small world.
*I should name my camera, like how Nadia name hers as Bob.*
Oh, got an assignment.
The assignment is titled ‘Kuala Lumpur, Essentially’. Basically, everything about KL and not being cliche while doing it. Buildings, people, trades, vibrancy , hustle & bustle, transport, traffic, colours, etc.
Left my cousin alone *me bad! hur hur hur* and joined Amelia and Kong, another photographer, went around the back road behind Central Market and around the Masjid Jamek area. Snap a lot of photos, around 200. Hopefully they turn out well. Haven’t upload them into the laptop yet. *Laptop needs a spank. Gotta format it*
Took people, some buildings, some funny, and weird things. Even stood in the middle of the road snapped a few pictures, then quickly ran to the side before kena hit by a mat rempit or a bus. Quite fun actually.
Anyways, I’m looking for more photographers that I can hangout with or go outing with. Take more photos as well. Gotta complete the assignment before next class anyway.
Why no pictures? Because I already have 2k of photos to go through. Genting pics, Lookout Point, DGMB BBQ, and god knows what other pics I haven’t gone through.
Btw, I’ve reached my 10,000 photos mark. =) Trigger happy. *and they say your first 10k photos are crap. Hmmm..*
